Air conditioners are a must have for staying cool in summer in Brisbane, but we don’t always want to turn on our air conditioning unit if we don’t have to. At Sensus Air we know a few tricks of the trade to stay cool in summer, which is why we started our blog – air conditioning units are the main focus of our blog articles, but we cover much more as well.
You will want to consider ways to minimise your air con use – which we will discuss in more detail via our blog – home air conditioning installation though is a great start.
Increase the temperature control
On a super hot day, many of us may consider turning our air conditioning temperature down to 20 degrees or even cooler. But this just chews up a lot more energy. Try increasing your temperature to 24 degrees, especially while you are asleep or at work, and you can save a bucketload in energy and cost.
Shut up shop
It may seem like a no-brainer but it is incredibly important to shut all the windows and doors in your house when your air conditioner is running.
You should also consider closing all of your blinds and curtains to block out the sunlight. This can make your air conditioner run a lot more efficiently.
It’s even better if you have specifically made blackout curtains or blinds that further keep out the heat.
Dress to the conditions
Summer is the right time of year to jump into a singlet top, shorts and thongs. If that’s not your style you should opt for natural fibres, such as cotton, linen and bamboo, which will keep you cooler. The less clothing you are wearing, means better use of your air con unit.
Use a fan
If your ceiling fan has a directional switch, flip it over so the blades run anti-clockwise. This will draw the hot air up and out instead of just circulating it within the room.
Keep hydrated
We’ve all heard how important it is to drink lots of water. Besides the health benefits, it will keep you cooler and mean you don’t need to use your air conditioner as much. Frozen water bottles are also great for holding against your face or body on really hot days.
Switch to LED lights
If your lights are bit older they may not be as efficient as the latest LED technology. LED lights are physically much cooler to touch and emanate less heat. While it’s ideal to have as little lights on as possible if you want to stay cool, LED is the best choice for the ones you need to use.
Annual maintenance
Air conditioning units run at their best when they are kept in tip-top condition. Ensure your AC unit is regularly checked and cleaned. An annual maintenance check from a qualified professional is also a great idea. Not only will your air conditioner run more efficiently, but it ensures you can catch and repair small problems early on before they get much bigger.
